How We Chose These Rooftops

Every venue on this list was selected based on four criteria. First, it must be currently operating in 2026. Several Johannesburg rooftop venues have closed in recent years including the much-loved Hallmark House Rooftop which closed in 2025. Second, the view must genuinely justify the visit. Third, the food and drinks quality must be worth the price. Fourth, the overall experience must suit a real range of travellers, not just the social-media crowd.

I have excluded venues that look impressive on Instagram but consistently underdeliver on service, food quality, or value when you are actually sitting there.

Best Rooftop Restaurants in Sandton

1. Alto234: Best Luxury Rooftop Bar in Johannesburg and Africa

Found on the rooftop of The Leonardo in Sandton, Alto234 boasts 360-degree views over one of the most-wooded cities in the world. Serving only the world’s finest when it comes to drinks and bar tapas, this is truly one of the most aspirational and exclusive places for epicureans in South Africa to be.

At a whopping 234 metres high, The Leonardo can’t be missed. Alto234 is the building’s crowning glory — a sky-high urban bar with unbeatable city views and a Champagne vending machine.

The name comes from the Latin word Alto meaning height, and 234 references how tall it stands in metres. The space can accommodate up to 100 people across seven seating areas, each with its own unique view of the city below.

Split into seven areas, Alto234 holds large lounge suite spaces and dining areas, as well as look-out points, mixing custom-made furniture with contemporary African fabrics, and firepits warming the lounge areas on cooler days.

The experience is structured around time of day. The Afternoon Experience runs from 13:00 to 16:00 at R390 per person. The Night Lights Experience runs from 19:00 to 23:00 at R390 per person. The entry fee includes a complimentary glass of Moët and Chandon. Food and beverage are charged on consumption. Limited seating availability.

A practical insider note from regular visitors: It is quite windy at the top after the sun goes down so a jacket is recommended. Staff provide everyone with blankets.

Opening hours: Tuesday to Sunday from 12:30pm to 11pm.

Price range: R390 entry per person plus food and drinks on consumption. Budget R600 to R1,000 per person for a full experience.

Dress code: Smart casual minimum. The crowd arrives dressed for the occasion. Jeans and sneakers will feel out of place.

Reservation required: Yes. For groups fewer than six, book on alto234.co.za. For larger groups, email altoinfo@alto234.co.za

Nearest Gautrain: Sandton Gautrain station, approximately 10 minutes walk.

Best time to visit: The sunset experience arriving around 5pm for the golden hour light that stretches west toward the Magaliesberg mountains.

Pros: Africa’s highest urban bar. Genuinely extraordinary 360-degree views. Africa’s first Moët and Chandon champagne vending machine. Iconic Johannesburg experience.

Cons: Entry fee applies before drinks. Can be windy in winter. Expensive for a full evening. Booking is essential and slots fill weeks in advance for weekends.

Stay nearby: The Leonardo Hotel is the obvious choice, with Aurum Restaurant also on site for dinner before or after your Alto234 experience.

2. San Deck: Best All-Day Rooftop Bar in Sandton

San Deck is the biggest and most elaborate rooftop bar in Joburg. Fire pits, hanging chairs, sofas and a dining area are joined by dozens of trees, sun loungers and even a small swimming pool atop the five-star Sandton Sun Hotel.

San Deck Bar and Restaurant is an all-day dining and drinking rooftop terrace, situated on the 6th floor of the Sandton Sun Hotel. The menu leans into local flavours and is served as both sliders, sharing plates and full meals. The drink menu takes inspiration from local South African beer, wines and spirits, mixed into signature San cocktails.

Weekends feature DJs and a more energetic crowd, turning the space into a social hub. San Deck is genuinely one of the most consistent rooftop experiences in the city and the one I recommend most confidently to visitors who want the full Sandton rooftop atmosphere without the exclusivity barriers of Alto234.

Opening hours: Open 11:00 to 22:00.

Price range: Mid to high. Cocktails from R120. Sharing plates from R150. No entry fee.

Dress code: Smart casual.

Reservation required: Recommended for weekends, particularly for groups.

Nearest Gautrain: The Sandton Sun Hotel and San Deck are a 10-minute walk from the Sandton Gautrain station.

Best time to visit: Sundowner hour from 5pm to 7pm when the Sandton skyline is at its most photogenic.

Pros: No entry fee. Fire pits in winter. Rooftop pool. All-day dining format. More social and accessible than Alto234. One of the city’s most beloved venues.

Cons: The steady construction of new tower blocks in Sandton’s business district has meant that the panoramic view is not as impressive as it once was.

Stay nearby: Sandton Sun Hotel is the property San Deck sits on and the most obvious choice. Sandton City Mall and Nelson Mandela Square are both within walking distance.

3. Artistry: Best Rooftop for Food, Music and Creative Energy in Sandton

Artistry in Sandton is not just a restaurant. It is a multi-layered space that blends food, music, and performance.

Artistry JHB is the brainchild of award-winning musician J’Something, who partnered with BlackBrick to conceptualise Artistry as a meeting space for Joburg living, working, and cultural immersion.

If you go there expecting just a drinks spot, you are going to be taken by surprise. Artistry combines a rooftop garden restaurant with a broader cultural venue that runs events, live performances, and creative programming that makes it feel genuinely different from every other rooftop bar in the city.

Price range: Mid. More accessible than Alto234 or Marble.

Dress code: Smart casual to stylish. The crowd here leans creative rather than corporate.

Best time to visit: Evenings when events and performances are scheduled. Check their social media before visiting for the current programme.

Pros: The most culturally interesting rooftop venue in Sandton. Food, music, and art in one space. Good value relative to the quality of the overall experience. Creative crowd and atmosphere.

Cons: The rooftop itself is secondary to the overall Artistry concept. If views are your primary goal, Alto234 or San Deck deliver more.

Stay nearby: Multiple Sandton hotels within easy Uber distance.

4. Katy’s Palace — Best Rooftop for an Event Evening and Girls Day

Katy’s Palace is a unique experience. A beautiful space with hanging chandeliers, a wonderful atmosphere, and sunset views of the Sandton skyline.

Katy’s Palace in the Sandton area sits above the busy commercial landscape and brings a glamorous, chandelier-lit atmosphere to the Johannesburg rooftop scene. It hosts regular events including deep house nights, private functions, and themed evenings that give it a social energy completely distinct from the more corporate atmosphere of San Deck or the exclusive luxury of Alto234.

Price range: Mid. Event entry fees apply for specific nights.

Best time to visit: Event evenings for the full Katy’s Palace atmosphere. Check their social media calendar before visiting.

Pros: Glamorous chandelier-lit aesthetic. Good event programming. Excellent for groups and celebrations. The sunset views of the Sandton skyline are a genuine highlight.

Cons: On non-event nights the atmosphere can be quieter than expected. Worth checking what is on before you go.

Stay nearby: Multiple Sandton hotel options within easy Uber distance.

Best Rooftop Restaurants in Rosebank

5. Marble Restaurant:Best Rooftop Fine Dining Experience in Johannesburg

In Rosebank, Marble has built its reputation around open-flame cooking and bold South African flavours. Perched above Keyes Art Mile, the restaurant combines floor-to-ceiling glass with a wraparound balcony, giving diners a sweeping look over the northern suburbs.

Known for its open-flame cooking by renowned chef David Higgs, the restaurant offers a menu full of flavour, complemented by its elegant decor featuring local artists’ work.

Marble is the most serious restaurant on this list in terms of culinary ambition. The open-flame cooking style produces food with a depth and character that most rooftop venues never attempt. If you are choosing a rooftop specifically for a memorable dinner rather than just drinks and a view, Marble is the right choice.

Opening hours: Lunch and dinner service. Check the Marble website for current hours as these change seasonally.

Price range: High. Budget R600 to R1,200 per person for a full dinner with drinks.

Dress code: Smart casual to smart. The Marble crowd is polished but not stiff.

Reservation required: Yes. Book well in advance for weekends, particularly for prime sunset dinner slots.

Nearest Gautrain: Rosebank Gautrain station, approximately 10 minutes walk via Keyes Art Mile.

Best time to visit: Dinner from 6:30pm when the kitchen is at its peak and the Rosebank skyline view is illuminated.

Pros: The finest food of any rooftop on this list. Open-flame cooking produces genuinely exceptional results. Beautiful wraparound balcony. Strong South African wine list. The overall experience justifies the price.

Cons: The most expensive option on the list for a full dinner. The view, while good, does not match Alto234’s 360-degree cityscape.

Stay nearby: Multiple Rosebank hotels including the Radisson RED within easy walking distance.

6. Red Rooftop Bar and Terrace at Radisson RED: Best Rooftop Bar for Cocktails and Sundowners in Rosebank

Radisson RED Rosebank

The Red Rooftop Bar and Terrace at Radisson RED Rosebank is the place to be in one of Johannesburg’s trendiest neighbourhoods. With a chic modern design and panoramic views of the Joburg skyline and Rosebank’s dynamic landscape, it offers a vibrant atmosphere for locals and travellers alike.

The space is decked out in timber, bold red, and crispy white elements, and styled with chic al fresco furnishings and fairy lighting to complement those sweeping 360-degree panoramic views over the city skyline. Stop by for a mimosa brunch next to the pool, or go later in the evening for cocktails and a vibey date night mood.

Perched on the top of the Radisson RED in Rosebank, this one feels like it was designed for golden hour. It’s modern and stylish, exactly as you’d expect from Rosebank. The crowd is a mix of hotel guests and locals who know this is the spot for after-work drinks that don’t descend into a corporate free-for-all.

Opening hours: Open daily 12:00 to 23:00.

Monday to Thursday, Saturday and Sunday from 12pm to 10:30pm. Friday from 12pm to 2am.

Price range: Mid. Cocktails from R130. No entry fee.

Best time to visit: Amazing during spring and summer days. Perfect for seeing the jacarandas during the season. Sunset from 5pm is the peak time.

Pros: No entry fee. Poolside rooftop setting. Industrial-chic aesthetic. More accessible than Marble for casual drinks. Late Friday nights for a vibrant atmosphere.

Cons: Smaller food menu than some venues. Can get busy on summer weekends. The poolside area is the main draw but limited in size.

Stay nearby: Radisson RED Rosebank is the hotel the bar sits on, making it the obvious choice for guests who want to walk directly upstairs after dinner.

Best Rooftop with a View of Johannesburg's Green Belt

7. Flames at Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff: Best Rooftop for Luxury Brunch and a Different View

At Flames, located at the Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff, the view shifts to greenery. The restaurant overlooks the Johannesburg Zoo and the city’s expansive urban forest, offering a softer perspective. The menu focuses on elevated regional dishes, with brunch and sunset dining being particularly popular. It offers a quieter setting compared to inner-city rooftops.

The menu includes fine cocktails and a great selection of champagne. The rooftop restaurant serves everything from grilled regional favourites, like the dry-spice-rubbed sea bass and Tomahawk ribeye steak, to pizza, pasta, and sushi. The Four Seasons rooftop is open daily for dinner, as well as lunch on weekdays and brunch on weekends.

Flames delivers an experience unlike any other rooftop on this list. Instead of the concrete and glass of the Sandton and Rosebank skylines, you look out over the leafy expanse of the Johannesburg Zoo and the northern suburbs’ urban forest. On a clear winter morning at brunch, this view is one of the most beautiful in the city.

Opening hours: Daily for dinner. Lunch on weekdays. Brunch on weekends.

Price range: High. Four Seasons pricing applies throughout. Budget R700 to R1,500 per person for a full meal with drinks.

Dress code: Smart casual to smart. Four Seasons standard applies.

Reservation required: Essential, particularly for weekend brunch and sunset dinner slots.

Best time to visit: Weekend brunch for the most celebrated Flames experience. Sunset dinner for romance.

Pros: The most beautiful and unusual view of any rooftop on this list. Four Seasons service standard. Excellent food quality. The quietest and most intimate atmosphere of all the major Joburg rooftops. Exceptional for couples and special occasions.

Cons: The most expensive venue on this list. Not in Sandton or Rosebank so requires a dedicated trip rather than combining with other activities. The green view will not appeal to visitors specifically seeking the Joburg skyline.

Stay nearby: Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff is the property and one of the finest hotels in Johannesburg for a special occasion stay.

8. Aurum Restaurant: Best Fine Dining Rooftop in Sandton

Aurum Restaurant at Level 7 of The Leonardo offers spectacular elevated views of the Sandton skyline. Aurum is the award-winning restaurant that sits one floor above the main Leonardo lobby and serves as the dining counterpart to Alto234 on the 57th floor. Where Alto234 is about the view and premium drinks, Aurum delivers a proper fine dining experience in the same building, with views over Sandton that are significantly elevated above street level even if they do not match the drama of the bar above.

For visitors who want both the view and serious food in the same building, the combination of Aurum for dinner and Alto234 for after-dinner drinks is one of the best evenings available in Johannesburg.

Price range: High. Fine dining pricing applies. Budget R600 to R1,200 per person for a full dinner with drinks.

Dress code: Smart. Aurum is the most formally dressed venue in this guide.

Reservation required: Essential.

Stay nearby: The Leonardo Hotel directly.

Best Rooftop for Nature and Outdoor Experience

9. E Bar at Thaba Eco Hotel. Best Rooftop for Something Completely Different

Take in nature scenes and lush greenery from the deck of Thaba Eco Hotel’s outdoor E Bar. This cocktail bar in Johannesburg is a stunning rooftop venue serving chilled champagne and signature cocktails with a small light meal menu. Live music performances are planned every month, and the venue is also available for private hire. E Bar is situated outdoors and only in operation during good weather.

Thaba Eco Hotel sits in Muldersdrift, west of Johannesburg, and the E Bar experience is fundamentally different from every other venue on this list. Instead of a city skyline, you are surrounded by indigenous trees, birdlife, and the sounds of nature with a cocktail in your hand. On a warm summer evening or a clear winter afternoon, it is one of the most genuinely relaxing outdoor bar experiences in the greater Joburg area.

When: Sunday to Monday, 7am to 10pm.

Price range: Mid. More accessible than the luxury hotel venues.

Dress code: Casual to smart casual. The outdoor bush setting suits relaxed clothing.

Best time to visit: Late afternoon in summer when the light through the trees is extraordinary.

Pros: Unlike any other rooftop bar in Johannesburg. Beautiful natural surroundings. Live music events. Peaceful and genuinely restorative.

Cons: Requires a car to reach Muldersdrift. Only operational during good weather. Not suitable as a wet season or winter venue.

Best Rooftop for Culture and Creative Energy

10. Living Room Jozi: Best Rooftop for Live Music and Local Culture in Maboneng

In Maboneng, the Living Room offers something completely different. Imagine sipping a cocktail at Living Room Jozi, where live music fills the air.

The Living Room in Maboneng is the rooftop choice for visitors who want to experience Johannesburg’s creative and cultural scene rather than its corporate and luxury face. The Maboneng precinct itself, a regenerated arts and culture district in the inner city, has an energy completely unlike Sandton or Rosebank.

The Living Room’s rooftop functions as a genuine community space, attracting Johannesburg’s creative class for events, live music, and the kind of spontaneous atmosphere that the more polished venues rarely produce.

Price range: Budget to mid. The most affordable rooftop experience on this list.

Dress code: Casual. The Maboneng crowd is creative and expressive rather than formal.

Best time to visit: Evenings when events are scheduled. Check social media before visiting.

Pros: The most culturally authentic rooftop experience in Johannesburg. Excellent live music programming. Affordable. A genuine window into Joburg’s creative scene.

Cons: Maboneng requires more urban awareness than Sandton or Rosebank. Not suitable for visitors who are not comfortable in a grittier, more urban environment. Requires careful Uber coordination for arrival and departure.

11. Jojo Rooftop Lounge: Best Rooftop for Nightlife Energy in Maboneng

Jojo Rooftop Lounge in Maboneng brings cultural energy to Johannesburg’s rooftop dining scene.

Jojo sits alongside the Living Room as one of Maboneng’s most established rooftop options, with a nightlife energy that picks up significantly from 9pm onwards. It is not a dinner venue. It is an evening and late-night space for people who want Johannesburg’s underground social scene rather than its polished surface.

Price range: Budget to mid.

Best time to visit: Late evening when the energy builds.

Pros: Genuine nightlife atmosphere. Affordable. Part of the Maboneng creative scene.

Cons: Same urban awareness considerations as the Living Room. Not suitable for early evening dining.

Best Rooftop for a Casual Shopping Day Sundowner

12. Island Bar at Southern Sun Hyde Park:Best Casual Rooftop Near Hyde Park

Join Joburg’s most selfie-loving set at Southern Sun Hyde Park Hotel’s Island Bar atop one of the city’s most luxury shopping malls, Hyde Park Corner.

The Island Bar at Southern Sun Hyde Park sits above Hyde Park Corner Mall in one of Johannesburg’s most affluent northern suburbs. For visitors who are in the Hyde Park area for shopping at the mall or dinner in the surrounding suburb, the Island Bar is the most convenient and relaxed sundowner option in that part of the city.

It does not compete with Alto234 for views or Marble for food. What it offers is a reliably pleasant, safe, and conveniently positioned rooftop experience for the Hyde Park and Rosebank corridor.

Price range: Mid.

Dress code: Smart casual.

Best time to visit: Late afternoon from 4pm for sundowners after a shopping afternoon.

Pros: Excellent location for Hyde Park shoppers. Safe, relaxed atmosphere. No entry fee. Southern Sun consistency.

Cons: Not a destination rooftop for the view alone. Works best as part of a Hyde Park afternoon rather than a dedicated evening out.

Stay nearby: Southern Sun Hyde Park Hotel directly.

Best Rooftop Restaurants in Johannesburg by Intent

Best for Sunset Views

Alto234 set high above Sandton on the 57th floor of The Leonardo holds the title of Africa’s highest urban bar. From here, the city stretches in every direction, with views reaching as far as the Magaliesberg mountains on a clear day. For sunset specifically, arriving at Alto234 around 5pm and watching the light change across the entire Joburg landscape as the sun drops toward the Magaliesberg is one of the most spectacular experiences available in this city.

Best for a Date Night

Marble in Rosebank for a serious dinner with a view. Flames at the Four Seasons for the quietest and most romantic setting. Alto234 for the most spectacular and memorable experience if budget allows.

Best for Cocktails Only

Whether you are looking for after-work drinks, exclusive parties, or simply enjoying sundowners with great views, this rooftop bar has something for everyone.

Best for Groups and Celebrations

San Deck at Sandton Sun for space, fire pits, a pool, and a format that accommodates groups naturally. Katy’s Palace for events and glamorous evenings. Alto234 for a genuinely special group experience with prior booking for the dedicated group areas.

Best Budget Rooftop Experience

Living Room Jozi in Maboneng for a culturally authentic and affordable evening. Red Rooftop Bar at Radisson RED Rosebank for a stylish mid-range experience without entry fees.

Visiting Joburg Rooftops by Season

Summer (October to March)

Summer is the best season for rooftop visits in Johannesburg when temperatures sit comfortably between 22 and 28 degrees in the evenings. The catch is that Joburg’s famous afternoon thunderstorms arrive regularly from November through February, which can end an outdoor rooftop session abruptly. Check the weather before going and have an alternative plan if dark clouds are building by late afternoon. The Red Rooftop at Radisson RED is particularly popular in summer for its poolside atmosphere.

Winter (May to August)

Johannesburg winters are dry, clear, and sunny with spectacular blue-sky days. The evenings can be very cold, dropping to 5 to 8 degrees, which makes an open rooftop significantly less comfortable after sunset. Alto234 provides blankets and has covered seating areas with firepits. San Deck has firepits as well. Bring a warm jacket regardless of how mild the afternoon feels. The clearer winter air actually produces better long-distance views from Alto234, making it one of the best winter rooftop experiences available.

Spring (September to October) and Autumn (April)

The two ideal seasons for rooftop dining in Johannesburg. Temperatures are warm and pleasant without the summer thunderstorm risk. The jacaranda trees bloom in Johannesburg in October, turning the city’s northern suburbs purple and making the view from Radisson RED Rosebank particularly spectacular during jacaranda season.
