South Africa is one of the most diverse travel destinations on Earth. In a single trip you can do world-class safari, eat at some of Africa’s finest restaurants, surf world-famous breaks, drive one of the continent’s great scenic roads, and stand in cities where history is still visibly written into the streets.

I am based in Johannesburg. I have driven most of these routes, stayed in many of these places, and written about all of them at depth. This is not a generic list  it is a considered answer to the question I get asked most often: where should I actually go in South Africa?

The 14 Best Travel Destinations in South Africa

  1. Cape Town  South Africa

Best for: City & nature

Africa’s most scenic city  and one of the most beautiful cities on Earth.

Cape Town has Table Mountain  one of the seven Natural Wonders of the World  rising directly behind the city centre, with a cable car to the top and 350-degree views across the Cape Peninsula and both oceans. That alone would make it worth visiting. But Cape Town also has the V&A Waterfront, Boulders Beach penguins, Chapman’s Peak drive, Camps Bay’s beach strip, Robben Island, the Constantia Winelands, and some of the finest restaurants on the continent.

What makes Cape Town genuinely exceptional is the density of world-class experiences within a compact area. You can hike Lion’s Head at sunrise, eat a Michelin-quality lunch at La Colombe, and watch the sun drop into the Atlantic from Signal Hill  all in the same day.

It is also South Africa’s most accessible city for international visitors  well-signposted, Uber-friendly, English-speaking, and with a tourism infrastructure that removes the friction of first-time Africa travel.

Don’t miss: Table Mountain cable car (book early in summer), Chapman’s Peak Drive at golden hour, the Boulders Beach penguin colony, and at least one night at a V&A Waterfront restaurant.

Best time: November to April for warm dry weather and outdoor activities. June to October for whale watching at nearby Hermanus and the Cape’s dramatic winter skies.

  1. Kruger National Park  South Africa

Best for: Big Five safari

South Africa’s most famous game reserve  and one of the finest safaris in Africa.

Kruger covers nearly 20,000 square kilometres of bushveld in Limpopo and Mpumalanga provinces. It has one of the highest concentrations of wildlife on the continent  lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, buffalo, wild dog, cheetah, hyena, and hundreds of bird species all living in a single contiguous ecosystem.

What makes Kruger exceptional among African safari destinations is flexibility. You can self-drive in your own hire car, staying in Kruger’s excellent network of rest camps from R800 per night. Or you can book a luxury private lodge in an adjacent reserve  Sabi Sands, Timbavati, Klaserie  for an all-inclusive, ranger-guided experience. Both approaches deliver outstanding wildlife. The self-drive option is genuinely unlike anything else in African safari and is the reason many experienced travellers return to Kruger specifically.

Don’t miss: A night drive (book through your rest camp), the Crocodile Bridge section for exceptional lion and leopard density, and at least one early-morning game drive when predators are most active.

Best time: May to September  dry season brings sparse vegetation and animals concentrate around water, making sightings far more frequent. The winter nights are cold but the game viewing more than compensates.

  1. Garden Route  South Africa

Best for: Scenic road trip

500 kilometres of South Africa’s most beautiful coastline  one of the world’s great drives.

The Garden Route runs along South Africa’s southern coastline from Mossel Bay in the west to the Storms River in the east  roughly 500 kilometres through a landscape that shifts between coastal cliffs, indigenous forests, river mouths, beach towns, and lakes. It is most commonly driven over four to seven days, with overnight stops at Wilderness, Knysna, and Plettenberg Bay.

The highlights include the Tsitsikamma National Park (with the highest bungee jump in Africa at Bloukrans Bridge at 216 metres, kayaking through sea caves, and the Otter Trail coastal hike), the Knysna Heads and lagoon, the town of George as a base, and the Wilderness National Park where five rivers meet the sea.

The Garden Route works both as a standalone trip from Cape Town and as the linking route between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth for those continuing to Addo Elephant Park and the Eastern Cape. Self-drive is the only way to do it properly.

Don’t miss: Tsitsikamma, the Bloukrans bungee, Wilderness National Park, oysters in Knysna, and a sunset at the Heads.

Best time: October to April for best weather. The region gets rain year-round but summer is warm and dry enough for consistent outdoor activities.

  1. Johannesburg  South Africa

Best for: City & culture

Vibrant, complex, misunderstood  and one of Africa’s most essential cities.

Most international visitors fly through Johannesburg without stopping. That is a mistake. The city that most people dismiss as a transit hub is in fact one of Africa’s most interesting places  the financial capital of the continent, a city of extraordinary creative energy, and the place where South Africa’s modern history is most visibly written into the streets.

The Apartheid Museum in Soweto is the finest historical museum in South Africa  deeply moving, meticulously researched, and essential for understanding the country you are visiting. Vilakazi Street in Soweto is the only street in the world to have housed two Nobel Peace Prize winners (Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu). The Cradle of Humankind, 50 kilometres northwest of the city, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site where the fossils of some of our earliest ancestors were found.

Johannesburg’s food scene is also genuinely world-class. The rooftop restaurants of Sandton, the street food culture of Maboneng, and the shisa nyama braai culture of Soweto together make Joburg one of Africa’s most exciting cities to eat in.

Don’t miss: The Apartheid Museum, Vilakazi Street, the Constitution Hill precinct, and a dinner at one of Sandton’s rooftop restaurants.

Best time: Year-round. Summer (October to March) has afternoon thunderstorms but warm days. Winter (May to August) is crisp and dry with clear blue skies  the best weather for outdoor walking.

  1. Stellenbosch  South Africa

Best for: Wine & food

Africa’s answer to Tuscany  wine estates, Cape Dutch architecture, and serious restaurants.

Stellenbosch is South Africa’s second-oldest town (founded 1679) and the heart of the Cape Winelands. More than 150 wine farms line the valley’s eight sub-routes, producing Pinotage, Chenin Blanc, and Bordeaux-style blends that compete with the world’s best. The town itself is one of the most beautifully preserved colonial-era settlements in the Southern Hemisphere  oak-lined streets, white-walled Cape Dutch architecture, and a university that keeps the atmosphere young and alive.

Beyond wine, Stellenbosch has become a serious food destination. Rust en Vrede, Delaire Graff, and Terroir at Kleine Zalze are among South Africa’s finest restaurants. The hiking in Jonkershoek Nature Reserve is exceptional. And the drive over Helshoogte Pass to Franschhoek is one of the best short scenic routes in the Western Cape.

Don’t miss: Waterford Estate for the best tasting experience, Rust en Vrede for dinner, the Dorp Street historic walk, and Jonkershoek for morning hiking.

Best time: February to April for harvest season and golden vine leaves. November to January for summer outdoor tastings. Year-round for the town and food scene.

  1. Hermanus South Africa

Best for: Whale watching

The best land-based whale watching destination in the world.

From June to November, southern right whales migrate into Walker Bay off Hermanus to calve and nurse their young. The numbers that gather here  reliably 50 to 100 whales in peak season  and the proximity to shore (often just metres from the clifftop path) make Hermanus the finest land-based whale watching destination anywhere on earth. No boat required. You simply walk the cliff path and watch.

The Old Harbour Museum and the whale crier a town official who blows a kelp horn to announce whale sightings  are two of South Africa’s more charming tourist quirks. The town itself is a pleasant, well-kept coastal resort with good restaurants and a walkable centre. Outside whale season, the cliff walks, shark cage diving at Gansbaai (45 minutes away), and the nearby Stanford village make Hermanus a year-round destination.

Don’t miss: The cliff walk during whale season (September and October are peak), the Old Harbour, and the drive along the R43 coastal road towards Gansbaai.

Best time: September to October for peak whale numbers and good weather. June to August for the start of whale season with fewer crowds.

Full guide: South Africa’s Must-Visit Destinations Guide (Hermanus section)

  1. Knysna  South Africa

Best for: Coastal lagoon

Oysters, the Heads, forest elephants, and a lagoon that turns gold at sunset.

Knysna is the most beautiful stop on the Garden Route  a town built around a vast tidal lagoon, sheltered by two sandstone cliffs known as the Heads where the Indian Ocean pushes through a narrow channel into the calmer water beyond. The combination of the lagoon, the surrounding indigenous forests, and the compact town centre makes Knysna one of the most photogenic places in South Africa.

The Knysna Heads viewpoint and the sunset boat cruises on the lagoon are the signature experiences. The Knysna forest is home to South Africa’s last wild elephant population  small (fewer than 10 animals), reclusive, and rarely seen, but the forest itself is magnificent regardless. The Knysna Oyster Festival in July is one of South Africa’s great food events, and the oysters are available year-round at waterfront restaurants.

Don’t miss: The Heads viewpoint at sunset, a lagoon boat cruise, oysters at a waterfront restaurant, and the Elephant Walk forest trail even if the elephants stay hidden.

Best time: October to April for best weather. July for the Oyster Festival. Knysna is pleasant year-round.

  1. Drakensberg  South Africa

Best for: Mountains & hiking

UNESCO-listed escarpment  the highest mountains in southern Africa and some of the continent’s finest hiking.

The Drakensberg (‘Dragon Mountains’ in Afrikaans, uKhahlamba  ‘barrier of spears’  in Zulu) is South Africa’s most dramatic mountain range, forming a 1,000-kilometre escarpment along the KwaZulu-Natal border with Lesotho. The range is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, protecting outstanding biodiversity, over 35,000 San Bushman rock paintings, and the source of several major rivers.

The most iconic single experience is the Sentinel Peak trail to the chain ladders  a 14km return hike that ascends the escarpment via two sets of steel ladders bolted to the cliff face, emerging on the plateau above Tugela Falls (948 metres, the world’s highest or second-highest waterfall depending on measurement). The central Drakensberg around Cathedral Peak offers the best balance of activities for those with mixed fitness levels in a group.

Don’t miss: The Sentinel Peak chain ladder hike, Tugela Falls viewpoint, Giants Castle San rock art guided walk, and a sunrise from a valley-facing lodge.

Best time: March to May for stable weather, golden autumn landscapes, and good waterfall flow. September to October for wildflower season and quiet trails.

  1. Durban  South Africa

Best for: Beach city & Indian Ocean warmth

South Africa’s warmest coastal city  Indian Ocean beaches, the best curry in Africa, and serious surf culture.

Durban sits on the Indian Ocean coast of KwaZulu-Natal  warmer, more humid, and culturally richer than the Cape beaches further south. The city has the largest Indian population outside of India, and the food culture that results is extraordinary: bunny chow (a hollowed-out bread loaf filled with curry), the Indian spice markets of Victoria Street, and an entire suburb, Chatsworth, built around the best curry restaurants in the country.

The Golden Mile beachfront is the social heart of the city  kilometres of warm Indian Ocean beach with surf breaks, promenade walks, and a beach culture that is genuinely different from Cape Town’s. uShaka Marine World is one of Africa’s best aquariums and water parks. The Moses Mabhida Stadium, built for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, offers a Big Swing and aerial gondola ride with outstanding city views.

Don’t miss: Bunny chow at Capsicum Restaurant or Patel’s Vegetarian Refreshment Room, a surf session at New Pier, uShaka Marine World for families, and the Victoria Street Indian Market for spices and fabric.

Best time: April to September for dry, warm weather and the best surf. October to March is hot and humid with afternoon thunderstorms  still enjoyable but less comfortable for extended outdoor activities.

  1. Pilanesberg National Park  South Africa

Best for: Malaria-free Big Five safari

The best first safari in Africa  Big Five, no malaria, two hours from Johannesburg.

Pilanesberg sits in an ancient volcanic crater in the North West Province, about 160 kilometres northwest of Johannesburg. It is one of South Africa’s largest game reserves and, crucially, one of the few Big Five destinations that is entirely malaria-free. This makes it the most practical safari choice for families with young children, first-time visitors who are short on time, and anyone travelling from Johannesburg without wanting to add a flight.

Wildlife density in Pilanesberg is impressive  lion, elephant, rhino, leopard, buffalo, hippo, cheetah, and wild dog are all present. The park is large enough that game drives feel genuinely wild rather than staged. It neighbours Sun City, making it easy to combine a morning game drive with a Sun City resort afternoon.

Don’t miss: Early-morning open-vehicle game drive (the park’s rhino density is exceptional), the Mankwe Dam area for hippo and crocodile, and the combination day with Sun City.

Best time: May to September for dry season wildlife viewing. Year-round for families given the malaria-free status.

  1. Soweto  South Africa

Best for: Cultural history

The heartbeat of modern South Africa  history, food, music, and Vilakazi Street.

Soweto  South West Townships  was built under Apartheid to house the Black workforce serving Johannesburg while keeping them separated from the white city. What emerged instead was one of Africa’s most culturally vibrant communities. The resistance movement that ultimately brought Apartheid down was organised here. The 1976 Soweto Uprising began here. Nelson Mandela lived here. Desmond Tutu lived here. Vilakazi Street is the only street in the world known to have been home to two Nobel Peace Prize winners.

Today Soweto is a destination on its own terms. The Hector Pieterson Memorial and Museum documents the 1976 uprising with shattering clarity. The Mandela House Museum on Vilakazi Street is both a historical document and a genuinely moving experience. The shisa nyama (grilled meat) culture of Soweto is among the most authentic food experiences in South Africa  eat at Wandie’s Place or Nambitha, where locals and visitors share the same table.

Don’t miss: The Hector Pieterson Memorial, Mandela House, lunch at a Vilakazi Street restaurant, and the Orlando Towers bungee jump if you want an adrenaline contrast to the history.

Best time: Year-round. Take a guided township tour rather than self-navigating on your first visit.

  1. Jeffrey’s Bay  South Africa

Best for: Surfing

Supertubes  one of the world’s fastest and most perfect right-hand surf breaks.

Jeffrey’s Bay exists for surf. The main break, Supertubes, is classified as one of the world’s ten best waves  a long, fast, tubular right-hander that barrels for up to 300 metres in ideal conditions. The WSL (World Surf League) holds a championship event here annually. Surfing at Supertubes requires serious ability. But J-Bay has a range of breaks for all levels, from the beginner-friendly Kiddie’s Beach to the intermediate Point and the advanced Supertubes.

For non-surfers, Jeffrey’s Bay is a pleasant, laid-back Eastern Cape beach town with excellent food, a famous shell museum, and an African penguin colony at nearby Kabeljouws. The sheer spectacle of watching professional-level surfers at Supertubes from the beach is worth the trip even if you never get in the water.

Don’t miss: Watching a high-tide session at Supertubes from the carpark (even in small surf it is beautiful), the shell museum, and a seafood dinner at one of the Main Street restaurants.

Best time: June to August for the best surf (WSL event is typically held in July). Year-round for the town atmosphere.

  1. Sun City  South Africa

Best for: Resort & safari

World-famous resort next to Pilanesberg  Big Five safari by morning, waterpark by afternoon.

Sun City is South Africa’s most famous resort complex  a sprawling entertainment destination built in the 1970s in the North West Province, surrounded by the Pilanesberg game reserve. It is not everyone’s kind of travel, and it knows it. It is deliberately over-the-top: four hotels, a casino, a wave pool, a water park, two golf courses, and elaborate themed architecture in a landscape that receives barely enough rain to sustain a lawn.

What makes Sun City work as a travel destination is the proximity to Pilanesberg. You can be on a Big Five game drive at dawn and back at the Palace of the Lost City pool by midday. For families, for group trips, and for travellers who want an African resort experience with genuine wildlife access, Sun City delivers something genuinely hard to replicate elsewhere.

Don’t miss: The Pilanesberg morning game drive booked through the Sun City activity desk, the Valley of Waves water park, and the Palace of the Lost City for the theatrical architecture.

Best time: Year-round  the resort operates consistently regardless of season. Avoid school holidays if you want smaller crowds at the water park.

  1. Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha)  South Africa

Best for: Coastal gateway

Gateway to Addo Elephant Park, the start of the Garden Route, and a malaria-free safari hub.

Port Elizabeth  officially renamed Gqeberha (the local Xhosa name for the area) in 2021  is the Eastern Cape’s main city and one of South Africa’s most practical travel hubs. It is the eastern end-point of the Garden Route, the gateway to Addo Elephant National Park, and surrounded by malaria-free game reserves that together constitute the best malaria-free safari region in southern Africa.

Addo Elephant National Park, 72 kilometres north of the city, is home to one of the largest elephant populations in the world  over 600 animals in a compact, accessible reserve. It also has lion, buffalo, rhino, and the endemic flightless dung beetle. The park is easily self-driven in a hire car from PE.

Don’t miss: A self-drive game drive in Addo Elephant Park (book accommodation inside the park through South African National Parks), the Boardwalk Casino precinct for the sunset views, and a day trip to the private reserves of the Shamwari or Kariega groups for a luxury safari experience.

Best time: Year-round  the Eastern Cape has a temperate climate and the malaria-free status makes timing flexible. May to August for the best safari conditions in the national park.

Is South Africa safe to visit?

South Africa has a reputation for crime that is real in specific contexts  particularly in parts of Johannesburg CBD, Cape Town’s Cape Flats, and other urban areas away from tourist zones. The tourist-facing areas covered in this guide  Cape Town’s waterfront and suburbs, Kruger, the Garden Route, the wine estates, the national parks — are all frequently visited by international tourists and are not where South Africa’s crime statistics are generated. Take standard precautions: do not leave valuables visible in hire cars, avoid walking alone in unfamiliar urban areas at night, and ask your accommodation for specific local advice on arrival.

Final Thoughts on South Africa Travel Destinations

South Africa does not have one best destination. That is the whole point of it. The country works because each destination is genuinely different from the last  the mountain city of Cape Town, the flat bush of Kruger, the ocean drama of the Garden Route, the wine valley of Stellenbosch, the mountain escarpment of the Drakensberg, the complex history of Soweto and Johannesburg.

A good South Africa trip combines at least three of these worlds. A great one takes its time in each of them.

Every destination on this list links to a full dedicated guide  accommodation, activities, best time to visit, and the honest advice that makes travel better. Start with the one that draws you most, and use the AI Trip Planner to build the rest of the itinerary around it.
